The Rivian is built for adventure, but are electric vehicles ready for prime time off road exploring? Samuel Hernandez has lots of experience in the off road community. His 2017 Jeep Rubicon is less Jeep and more rock crawler these days. He loves getting away from crowds and out into nature. After enjoying driving his Audi E-Tron he decided to take a chance on the Rivian R1T. Samuel talks about his recent trip to King of the Hammer, how the Rivian handles off road trials, charging in the middle of the dessert, and how the Rivian does towing his giant jeep.

On this episode of All Electric Conversations, Steve and I sit down to chat about the progression of electric vehicle charging, how owning a Tesla vehicle differs from owning a CCS car, and what risks you might be taking when you choose to road trip in an EV in today's current state.
 
Public fast charging is a disaster. Do we think it's gotten better since we started driving EVs in 2017? Is Tesla really that far ahead?
 
We share our take on the current climate of charging and how we think things have progressed. Through stories of our trips and EVs we explore the difference between driving an Tesla vs. any other brand of electric vehicle. We discuss what we think needs to change to make charging better and the risk you take any time you hit the road in for an EV road trip. We also discuss our feelings on the cost of fast charging and if a higher price for charging is the answer to the charging problem.

005. Hitch Modifications, Towing with a Model S, and What Makes a Good Tow Vehicle

Can you tow a 27' Airstream with a Tesla Model S? If you ask Andy Thomson, he will tell you yes you can. Andy joined us from London, Ontario to talk about hitch modifications, what makes a good tow vehicle, and his travels with his Model S and Airstream.
 
Andy has been modifying hitches and selling Airstreams for decades at CanAm RV. He has a unique knack for understanding tow vehicles and hitches, especially which ones are best for towing even though they might not be what you think of when you think of a tow vehicle. Aside from selling RVs and modifying hitches, Andy also takes his Airstream towed by his Tesla Model S from Canada to Florida every year.

Bruce's DIY spirit began with his father who encouraged him to build and explore as a kid. When he and his wife wanted to start having more camping adventures, Bruce decided to take on building a camper well suited to their needs and the electric vehicle he tows it with, a Tesla Model X.
